Throughout this issue, you’ll learn more about our MOX Everywhere™ suite of banking products. MOX enables mobile banking on smartphones, tablets, desktops, and soon, wearables. From consumer to business to employees, we support your entire institution. We’ve been busy here at the zoo and we’re happy to share what we’ve been working on — groundbreaking product roadmap items like SmartwebApps and SmartwearApps, valuable new partnerships, and conferences where we get to reveal new technology while furthering our education.

Since the last newsletter, we’ve been pretty busy with the product roadmap. Check out what’s new:

Apple Watch

As part of our MOX Everywhere™ suite of banking products we are excited to announce that when the Apple Watch launches on April 24, eight lucky Malauzai customers will be part of a select group of innovative financial institutions to be first in the U.S. with an app ready for the watch. We call them SmartwearApps.

Version one features will include the ability for end-users to check balances, view transaction history for all available accounts, and access a branch locator. It will also offer advertisement /educational space for the institution. The app provides multi-language capability to support English and Spanish-speaking users. When we talk about making banking easier for consumers, we have to look beyond the technology itself and think about how we create awareness. How do we let people know we have really awesome banking apps that make things so much more convenient? How do we get the technology into consumers’ hands? And what does being relevant mean when it comes to marketing and sales messages?

One easy way to create awareness and strengthen your brand is through social media.

User generated content in social helps so link back to your social profiles often.

Social cues/listening relates to sales

If your social media manager knows how to listen to cues, you can generate leads. For example, if someone posts about getting a new job, now you can talk to them about their wealth management portfolio. If someone posts about needing a new car, talk to them about an auto loan. If someone gets married, time to talk about a home loan. By listening to social media conversations you can create targeted/personalized email campaigns as well as ads. The cues are the same, they’re just ripe for the picking in different channels now. This is where creating relevant marketing messages happens.

In-app social Sharing/Refer-a-Friend

A really handy feature that supports social media strategy is Malauzai’s Social Sharing/Refer-a-Friend solution. Social Sharing enables peer-to-peer marketing, which has become increasingly important and effective. It helps FIs increase word-of-mouth and stand out from the competition. Word-of-mouth recommendations from peers influence buying decisions. Often times, friends trust each other more than they trust businesses so when someone follows you on social media and/or refers you to a friend – that’s powerful. It’s an immediate endorsement that lends you credibility. Social Sharing/Refer-a-Friend can positively influence your online reputation and breadth of voice. It helps you:

  • Strengthen your brand via social channels
  • Extend your brand reach & create your digital footprint
  • Be where consumers are; connect, engage, & develop loyalty

Additionally, the SmartApp offers the option for end users to post a status update to their own Facebook page with whatever message they want! For example, a message FIs might share with their customers/members could look something like this:

Did you just make the final payment on your car? Brag a little, you earned it! Share an update right from your banking SmartApp to let your friends know the good news and see who wants to celebrate tonight!

Product Delivery & Support

It is always an exciting time to create and distribute a mobile banking platform to customers/members. However, one of the most important components of this process that often doesn’t get enough attention is the employee training. In order to facilitate a smooth rollout, it is a great idea to train employees to know the product inside and out and to be able to serve as the experts when customers have questions about the new applications. Even if you’ve had your SmartApp for a while, it’s a good idea to revisit training to make sure everyone is comfortable and up to speed. And any time you add a new feature or there’s a new release you should spend some time on training.

Some things to consider when conducting training:

  • Have as many employees as possible to participate in testing the applications
  • Half of the testers should use a formal test plan to ensure that as many “real life” scenarios are tested in a thorough manner
  • Half of the testers should NOT use the test plan (your customers will not have a test plan and we want to know that the SmartApp is intuitive)
  • The testers should represent the general population (tech savvy and novices, multiple devices, multiple account types, etc.)
  • Have the employees actively participate in creating a FAQ document and make sure all employees can answer the questions
  • Use the test application to demo the application to those who have not participated in testing
  • Delay the mass marketing efforts to a few weeks after the SmartApp is live in stores in order to do a “Friends and Family” secret rollout

Do yourself a favor and keep your team engaged! Follow these steps and you will have a great SmartApp launch!

Mobile Strategy Tip

One of the most important metrics that an Institution can track in our REBA (Real-time End-User Behavioral Analytics) engine is the number of Active users to Registered Users. This is a helpful metric that reflects the usefulness and adoption of the SmartApp within your customer/member base. As you launch new features and updates, we find that our most successful customers see a 3-4% lift on average in active user rates. For example, adding a feature like Person-to-Person (P2P) payments might be interesting to a new set of users that will use the SmartApp solely to take advantage of this feature. These users can be considered “Net New” & will often take advantage of many other features in the SmartApp. Broadening the mobile offering with quality features is the best way to increase the active user count. Top enhancements include Remote Deposit Capture, P2P, Picture Pay, Local Rewards (Buzz Points) & PFM (Geezeo).

Partnering with Payveris, Malauzai worked with First United Bank to launch the bank’s P2P (Person to Person) payments, or Pay It Now feature. The $1.2 billion bank is meeting people where they are today to remain on the cutting edge of mobile innovation. “More consumers are turning to alternative payment providers to meet their needs, cutting the bank out of the transaction,” said Kevin Carson, chief technology officer of First United Bank. “By working with Malauzai and Payveris, our bank will be the trusted destination for customers seeking quick P2P payments.”

The mobile channel is an exciting one because it will continue to grow and evolve based on the changing needs of consumers over time. First United Bank appreciates the need to continue to offer mobile services that are convenient, quick, and easy to use. In addition to keeping their website up to date with app updates and enhancements, First United also looks to social video-sharing site, YouTube, to create brand awareness and promote their mobile solutions.

This is a great example of a video that’s both instructional and promotional — really serving the same purpose — to share with their customers and potential customers how the app makes personal banking easier.

Prior to Malauzai, Galen cofounded a start-up branding firm in Athens, GA, specializing in graphic design, web development and social media management.

What is something we might not know about you?

I’m an avid hockey fan – specifically of the Chicago Blackhawks

Hobbies?

Playing drums, growing mustaches and exploring the city with my beautiful wife. I’m also an active member in the local University of Georgia Alumni Group (GO DAWGS!)

I enjoy playing around with all of the apps and trying to come up with creative new ways to break them.

Prior to joining Malauzai, Craig worked for Social Security Disability and assessed disability applications that were submitted. Craig also worked for AIG as a business/QA analyst.

What is something we might not know about you?

A month or two before starting at Malauzai, I was at a Kansas concert in San Antonio. I won a contest to get an autographed guitar from the band and meet them after the concert.

Hobbies?

Hiking, making and drinking beer, watching bad movies (and good ones too), playing my bass guitars, listening to music.

I’ve been sky diving and bungee jumping in New Zealand.
